The value wars among fast food and casual restaurant chains is heating up! With places offering good deals like the McDonald's limited time $5 meal.
BUT there's an exciting new entrant into the game with Campus Burgers from serial restaurant owner Jim Angelopoulos.
A hamburger costs $1.99! Can you believe that?? And that's not a price from the 1950s, this is the actual menu price in 2024.
Pic of the menu as proof!
The burger comes with special sauce, pickles, and grilled onions. No lettuce or tomato. You could get a cheeseburger or double cheeseburger for a little bit more. Fresh cut fries are available by the tall cupful for $3.99 each.
This place opened about 5 weeks ago and it's a block away from San Jose State University in downtown San Jose, literally near a couple dorm buildings. Jim wanted to make something affordable for people and the students nearby. It's not intended to be fancy, but rather good value for the dollar. So they need to be very efficient in the kitchen with high volumes. No customizations allowed on the burger, unless you have want it plain (then it's no sauce / pickles / onions).
Apparently it was inspired from him watching the movie The Founder and I felt those kind of vibes of going back to basics with simplicity and delicious food at affordable prices. Even with how the menu looks too.
It's floor to ceiling windows so you can see all the exciting burger making in action and the piles of ingredients like racks and racks of buns!
When I got there, there was only a couple people and my order took less than the estimated 7-10 mins they told me. Fresh burgers take time! By the time I left, there was a big line of college students coming in for some!
There's also some picnic tables for sitting too. My hamburger and fries:
Hubby couldn't wait so took a bite of his double cheeseburger already:
Even though it doesn't look that attractive, it's actually quite tasty!! So tasty that I went back in line to get another one lol. I recommend ordering more burgers than you think you want 😆. My first order was about $14 including tip. The fries were ok, probably would've been better if it was hot and steaming.
Here's my second order of just a burger, insane price!! Came out to be $2.53 because I gave some tip.
As we were there, there would just be occasional waves of people, so this place is poppin'! Apparently on some nights, they can have a line out there for 2-3 hrs! Whoa!! College students are hungry! And I think this place is only going to be more packed as more people find out about it!!
Stop by for a burger (or two 😛)!
