This place has become a fast favorite. It's like a white tablecloth atmosphere of a restaurant, while the prices are very reasonable, and the food is 10/10.
The entrees come with bread, but you can ask for it ahead of time. That's what we do to keep the little one pre-occupied before the food comes (a good way to prevent any screaming before dinner..).
The Afghan bread is delicious and they give you a spicy green sauce to go with it. It's like a tad too spicy for my mild tastebuds, but I keep eating it anyways.
The food comes out very quickly by the way. Before we blinked, the appetizer was already out. We got the chef's platter. It was so much food, I was already full by the time we were done with the appetizer. So in hindsight, we won't get this again to save room for the main course. Though we did like the sambosas (fried with ground lamb + chickpeas inside) and pakawra-e-badenjan (fried eggplant). The aushak (dumplings) were okay, not as much of a fan.
Ok for entrees, you MUST try the Qabili Pallaw. It's seasoned lamb under a literal mound of pallaw (seasoned rice) with strips of carrot and raisins. I love the raisins in it. The whole medley that this creates is really delicious and I haven't had anything like it before. The lamb is very tender too. Anyone who I've seen order this dish has only been able to finish a portion of it. You look over and ask if they've even eaten any of it. It's such a big mound!! Definitely good for sharing.
The combination kebab is amazing - both the steak and the chicken. Huge pieces of kebab meat, very juicy and flavorful, and the rice is a great complement to it too. Plus more bread!
I can't speak much about the other menu items because I always stick to these tried and true favorites, but I'm sure the other items are delicious too.
Overall, we were stuffed and loved the whole meal. We had leftovers too, and that was tasty too. So much food for an excellent price. Well worth a dining experience out with the family!
It's located in downtown Sunnyvale, in the newly built area with the apartments and Target and Whole Foods within walking distance. You can walk off dinner with a stroll around Target afterwards. I believe there's also a San Carlos location of Kabul as well.
