This bakery / coffee shop is so cute and bright and modern. Such a nice place to meet up with friends (or a date) for coffee or enjoy a quiet moment by yourself. They have a posted sign that it's a technology-free zone, hence it's a space for hanging out and relaxing (not working 😛).
Founded in 2016 by Anne who grew up in Germany and always loved baking, Backhaus was started in her home kitchen. They have a San Mateo location and recently opened the Burlingame one too.
I visited the Burlingame location and it's two stories, first floor has the baked goods, a barista, and some seating. The second floor is even more spacious with additonal seating. It was quite busy when we were there and it definitely has a cozy community feel to the place.

I settled on a banana chocolate and walnut croissant and some "lil dudes" (chocolate pretzel bites). My hubby got the mortarella croissant sandwich and an espresso tonic.
The banana chocolate and walnut croissant was WOW!! So moist and delicious on the inside and crispy / flaky on the outside. It reminds me of a banana nutella crepe but now that's inside a croissant! You've got to try this! It is pretty rich though so I would share with someone. The lil dudes were alright, but a bit too salty for my liking. Creative idea and cute name though! My hubby enjoyed his picks and thought they were tasty.
We couldn't leave without trying the bread! So we picked up a seeded sourdough loaf to bring home. Look how purdy it is!! Stunning design with the seeds! It was great for breakfast the next day, especially toasted 🙂
Overall, we enjoyed our visit to Backhaus. The ambience was amazing and the banana choc walnut croissant was bomb! We would definitely return to try more things! It would also be great to stop by to try the breakfast menu at the Burlingame location, which is only offered Thurs - Sunday.
