I first discovered Melissa Wood from an interview article about the clothing and home designer Jenni Kayne. She was talking about how she juggles her everyday life with kids and mentioned how she squeezes in a quick 15 min routine with the Melissa Wood Health app.
Melissa Wood Health App
Intrigued, I searched into it and discovered Melissa Wood-Tepperberg who created a health and wellness app where she shares workouts, meditations, nutrition tips, and more. Sure there's lots of other folks in the fitness space who do this, but what I found refreshing about her style is that she developed her own technique that's a mix of yoga and pilates. She offers short and effective workouts which is great for busy moms on the go. Every time I finish a workout, my body just feels much more energized and refreshed, even if it was brief!
She encourages people to work out and move your body, even if it's for a couple mins, 5-10 mins or a longer session. She really emphasizes and believes that if you just move your body for a little bit, it makes you feel so much better. And even though it's hard to put into practice and set aside time to do so, she makes it feel much more attainable with the options of short workouts in her app.
Her app has so many workouts to choose from and to focus on certain parts of the body and for different difficulty levels. I mostly stick with the short beginner flows from 10 mins - 30 mins. When I've tried fitness subscriptions before, like Les Mills, they offer effective workouts but it's almost 50 mins long. And it's hard to gather the motivation to carve out that much time for a workout, and then I end up not doing it.
The price point is attractive too, it's only $10 a month. She did have a special earlier in the year to pre-pay for the whole year, but I prefer paying monthly. If I pre-pay it, it feels like a sunk cost whether I use it or not. If I pay each month, I feel more motivated to keep doing it, otherwise I will cancel at any time throughout the year. Sure there are times where I haven't used it as much, but actually I've been turning to it more for meditation than exercise.
Meditation
That brings me to my next point, I was looking for a way to exercise more, but one of the amazing things that Melissa has brought into my life is a newfound enjoyment of meditation. I've tried many meditation practices before like Calm or Headspace or meditations on YouTube. But something about how Melissa talks about and leads meditation sessions has made it stick much more than in the past.
Actually before I subscribed to her app, I tried out the free workouts she had available on YouTube and started listening to her Move with Heart podcast. The early podcast episodes where she talks about her journey and morning routine and some of her closest friends are the most interesting. Meditation comes up a lot and again, she emphasizes here that a few minutes a day can make a difference, which makes it feel more attainable and feasible to do.
I enjoy the range of meditations she offers in her app and my husband likes the sound bath one which makes him fall asleep faster haha. The way she speaks in her meditation sessions helps me feel more grounded, calm, relaxed, and gives me a good reset.
Melissa has also brought on additional creators to expand the content offered on her platform and the one I've probably watched the most is from Yasmine who leads meditations in the app too. Yasmine is great and has refreshing and beautiful meditations too.
I also enjoy the lifestyle content she shares, as she has great style - you can check out her recommended picks on her website too.
I've also been fascinated by her entrepreneurial journey too as she talks about how she stumbled into the fitness space by starting to film her workouts in her living room with her iPhone. Her audience resonated with her approachable style and she has since grown the platform into a health and wellness empire. She talks about she was filled with self-doubt, low self-confidence and never dreamed of creating something like this. It's really amazing how she created this business and has changed many people's lives to move with more intention and love.
