I'm SO excited to share about my latest find that I'm in love with! It's the CSA box of veggies from Greenhearts Family Farm in Half Moon Bay. They deliver all over the Bay Area for free and it's a weekly box (or biweekly if you choose) that arrives on your doorstep on Thurs/Fri depending on where you live.
Each week they also email you on Wednesday with an option to add some add-ons to your delivery.
I have just gotten the standard box so far (which is $40), and oh my, is it filled with goodies! I mean an abundant amount of fresh, vibrant, organic vegetables! There's perhaps 1-2 varieties of fruit as well, but it's mostly veggies. (And I'm totally OK with that because I have the amazing fruitqueen box for my fruit.)
Here are some photos of the boxes we've received:
What I love about these boxes: many things. It's supporting local farms. If they don't grow it at their Greenhearts farm, it's sourced from a local farm. The good thing about sourcing from multiple farms is that you receive a variety of produce and it changes up from week to week. The box feels abundant, very good value for what you're paying for, and a wide ranging variety of fruits and veggies that are in season. I admit I never had the energy to look up what's in season and buy it, and now it's done for you with this box! It feels like you're truly eating with the seasons here, with squashes and citruses being in the plenty right now.
On the topic of variety, it feels like a good mix of things that we can actually incorporate and cook meals out of. In previous CSA boxes that I've gotten, it's a mish mash of things that I can't really cook a meal with, or too many of one random veggie. I end up going to the grocery store to get more ingredients to finish cooking a meal. There's always lots of green veggies included in this CSA box.
Another benefit to CSA boxes is that the produce comes in a box with maybe paper bags inside. Everything is recyclable. It seems more eco-friendly than going to the grocery store and putting every produce item into a different plastic bag or where it comes in it's own plastic container. (I do have those small reusable produce bags but always forget to bring them / wash them, it can be a hassle).
These weekly deliveries have saved me time and mental energy! I have cut down on my grocery store trips. I used to spend so much energy figuring out when to squeeze in another hurried trip to the grocery store and then it's another battle to decide what to buy there. More grocery trips in the past also meant buying more packaged foods, but I'm less tempted by them now! So we are eating more fresh food than packaged foods. And there's a timeline to eat it by haha! I feel like I try to eat that box worth before the next box arrives. Our grocery budget is a little more predictable now with the $40 recurring expense of the box. Ok I could go on and on about benefits here, but I won't :).
The last thing that makes this CSA box special is the people behind the box. Greenhearts family farm and this CSA program is run and owned by Paul Hamilton and Aurora Wilson (their story here). You can sense their passion and love for farming, nature, food, and the community.
Each box includes a note from Farmer Paul and the contents of the box. The note is very heartfelt and the first one I read was so touching! They just seem very humble, gracious, and generous in wanting to feed the families of their community with good, wholesome, healthy food. They're working really hard to do their best to deliver on that mission, and I am inspired by that. They are truly making the Bay Area a more special place to live.
I'll end with this quote from the letter:
"No matter the season, one item you'll always find in a Greenhearts CSA box is gratitude. Farmer Paul"
