I was due for some Me Time and headed over to NM Cafe at Neiman Marcus in Stanford Shopping Center. It's tucked away on the third floor of the store and pretty quiet with only a couple of tables when I got there around 11am on a weekday.
The food and service are excellent. With every entree, you get a complimentary popover. This I was very excited about. I remember I first had one during afternoon tea at The Rotunda in Neiman Marcus in SF (my heart broke when I heard the restaurant closed during the pandemic, but now it looks like it's open again, yes!!). You don't need to go all the way to SF to fulfill your popover cravings though, you can get one in Palo Alto!
It comes hot, fluffy, and fresh, with strawberry butter and a warm cup of broth as well. Mmm so tasty. The sweet and salty balance each other out into perfect contentedness.
Here's how it looks inside. Hollow but filled with love.
Ok but then as I was thoroughly enjoying it, it accidentally flew off my plate and onto the floor (don't ask me how). I was stunned and was almost going to eat it because I didn't want this precious thing to go to waste. But I ended up telling the waiter and he brought me a new one haha. So here's my popover round 2 :P
Then my entree came - this glorious, humongous plate of Lemon Butter Crab Pasta.
It was decadent! muah! My only thought was, "Omg this is so good" as I kept eating more forkfuls of pasta. It is so filling though, and I had half leftover to bring home to a hungry husband. Also the waiter told me that the table of 4 next to me ordered 4 plates of that pasta, so it's that good lol.
Within my line of sight was the tray of cookies sitting on the hostess stand, which were tempting, but I was stuffed, so next time I'll end my meal with one of those.
Btw I found out that you can order half a dozen popovers to go with the strawberry butter, so I want to try that out next time for a party or a gift!
Overall, such a satisfying meal. I'll definitely return to NM Cafe!
